Human Values
Human values ensure the harmonious continuity of civilised life. They apply to the secular and practical day to day expressions of universal values, for example, co-operation, honesty, humility, responsibility, simplicity and unity. They encompass whatever is noble, dignified and worthy of respect in humanity. In a technological environment, this term draws attention to those important qualities that often get pushed aside in name of science and material progress. They are not the same as universal values in that they do not apply to any society in any part of the world, and they may not apply over a long period of time. They are subject to change but it is gradual, and the values may persist for several generations. All values are intertwined and interdependent. Human values are the interface between universal values and temporal values, establishing a balance that gives meaning and purpose to the expression of spirit in the material world. Human values are what we cultivate and are the special focus of this course on spirituality and values.
