Political Values
Political values display the ideals of particular political systems. Considered important at this time are democratic values such as freedom of speech, freedom of religion, universal franchise, the right to defend yourself in court, trial by jury, protection from cruel and unusual punishment, the right to a living wage and equal pay for both genders. Political values vary according to the regional system and the historical period. In mythological times, when political leaders were imbued with the highest spiritual values, the political system was monarchy, the populations were small and the king was a father figure. Such systems no longer succeed when populations grow and resources are distributed inequitably. Leadership today is susceptible to corruption and abuse of power, so democratic political values restrain any individual or party from amassing power beyond a certain limit.
